A special Pre-Conference event for physicians, physician's assistants, nurse practitioners, and dentists working with breastfeeding dyads.


Course Objectives:

At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Identify signs and symptoms of tongue and lip tie
  • Explain health concerns regarding tongue and lip tie, such as dental, digestive, and speech
  • Integrate assessment and treatment strategies into practice

Melissa Cole, IBCLC, RLC

Melissa Cole

Melissa Cole, IBCLC, RLC is a board-certified Lactation Consultant and neonatal oral-motor assessment professional in private practice. Melissa is passionate about providing comprehensive, holistic lactation support as well as speaking and writing on these topics. She is dedicated to improving the level of clinical lactation skills for health care providers. She is an adjuct professor at Birthingway College of Midwifery in Portland, OR, where she teaches advanced clinical lactation skills. She is active with several lactation and health care professional associations, including the International Affiliation of Tongue-Tie Professionals. Melissa lectures, publishes, and conducts research on lactation and health-related topics. She enjoys living and working in the gorgeous Pacific Northwest with her family of five.

Abhay Vaidya, MD

Dr. Abhay VaidyaDr. Abhay Vaidya has fellowship in Otolaryngology from Loyola University Medical Center and was accredited by the American Board of Otolaryngology in 1999. Dr. Vaidya practices at West Coast Ear, Nose and Throat in Ventura County. He received his MD from Oklahomoa College of Medicine, then pursued surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology at Loyola Medical Center. Dr. Vaidya has several leadership roles in the Medical Association in Oklahoma and Ventura County. He has also assisted in research, and is published in several medical journals and books. Dr. Vaidya supports breastfeeding through the treatment of infants with tongue-tie, and was awarded with the Breastfeeding Coalition of Ventura County's Liquid Gold Breastfeeding Award in 2014 for his work in this area.

Heather Nichols, MD, FAAP

Dr. Heather NicholsDr. Heather Nichols is a pediatrician and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Nichols practices at Coastal Pediatrics Medical Group. She received her MD from Drexel University School of Medicine and then pursued pediatrics at Brown University Pediatric Residency. Dr. Nichols has been involved with research, publications, presentations, and grants to support children in Ventura County. She supports breastfeeding and has taken the lead to engage medical providers in the support of breastfeeding now that our County is working towards breastfeeding-friendly hospitals. This year, Dr. Nichols enthusiastically accepted the invitation to become a board member of the Breastfeeding Coalition of Ventura County.
